Building AI-Resilient Writers. A Lesson Plan for Grades 4-6

Building AI-Resilient Writers. A Lesson Plan for Grades 4-6

AI resilient writing isn't about banning AI. It's about helping students notice when leaning on AI hurts their voice and when it can sharpen their thinking. Here's a lesson that takes thirty minutes and works well as a standalone or as the start of a longer unit.

Setup. Pick a short prompt your class would normally write to. Something like describing a favorite place or making an argument for a school rule.

Step 1 (5 min). Have students write for three minutes without any tools. Stop them mid sentence. The point is to capture their natural voice.

Step 2 (10 min). Ask them to use AI to rewrite or improve what they wrote.

Step 3 (15 min). Compare. What changed? What feels more like them? What feels less? This is the lesson.

The discussion is the curriculum. Students start to notice that AI flattens their voice in some places and clarifies their thinking in others. That awareness is what we mean by AI literacy.
